Whizz-Kidz launches England-wide Schools Consultation to capture school life for disabled children

Today, 29 September, the Kidz Board are launching a consultation of disabled children across England by targeting over 20,000 state-run primary, secondary and special educational needs schools.
The consultation takes the form of a confidential questionnaire, and aims to take a national picture of modern school life – both inside the classroom and out – for disabled pupils and students.
The far-reaching survey was conceived and created by the young people, all aged between 13 and 18 – who are actively involved in raising awareness of Whizz-Kidz and advising on key issues.
As well as questions on accessibility, the survey covers issues such as bullying, respect and attitudes.

Kidz Board hit Manchester streets to explore accessibility

The Kidz Board went out into the streets of Manchester on Saturday 26 September to test the city’s accessibility for wheelchair-users, as they completed a series of challenges.
Armed with cameras and video recorders, the team all aged 13 to 19, documented their journeys as they set out to reach local landmarks by bus, train and tram. Their race against time culminated at the Museum of Science and Industry where they met with John Leech MP Manchester Withington, and the Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Minister – to discuss how easy they found getting around.

Mecca Bingo and Whizz-Kidz call for donations of Heels for Wheels – with help from celebrity friends

On Friday 25 September, Mecca Bingo and Whizz-Kidz launched a new fundraiser that will turn ‘heels’ into ‘wheels’ – calling upon the public to donate old shoes that will raise money for young people’s mobility equipment.
Maidenhead MP, and Shadow Secretary for Work and Pensions, Theresa May officially announced the scheme at Mecca Bingo HQ – standing beside a giant supermarket trolley to eventually be filled to the brim with shoes, designed by Discovery Channel inventor of wacky creations Edd China.

London Mayor backs our award-winning Tower Hamlets project

London Mayor Boris Johnson visited our award-winning partnership with Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust (PCT) on Friday 4 September , observing a young person being assessed in order to receive the right mobility equipment best suited to their individual needs.
Mayor Boris Johnson said: “Whizz-Kidz is an excellent charity that makes a huge difference to the lives of many young disabled people. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit today and I was impressed by the independence mobility equipment can provide. Tower Hamlets and Whizz-Kidz are proving that communities can reap the benefits of health partnerships and I wish them continued success.”
