Whizz-Kidz statement on the Lamb Report on SEN – 16 December 2009

Disabled children’s charity Whizz-Kidz welcomes the Lamb report on the current SEN system, and Rt Hon Ed Balls’ response. In particular we are pleased to see the DCSF promise further investment in an upcoming project to tackle SEN and disability related bullying, and the move to include schools in the DDA duty to provide auxiliary aids and services to young disabled people.
Whizz-Kidz is currently carrying out its own Schools Consultation – an England wide survey of disabled children and young people about their experiences of school life.
Early feedback indicates that the bullying of disabled young people is an all too frequent experience. We also have anecdotal testimony from our own beneficiaries …

Skillz for Life – we launch new fun kidz sessions in 11 regions

Whizz-Kidz is launching new social and skills-based sessions for young disabled people in 11 different regions around the country in early 2010, called ‘Skillz for Life’.
Three modules will run in each region in the first four months of the New Year; open to disabled young people aged between 13 and 18. Their aim is for young people to make new friends, have fun and build their confidence – through sessions incorporating teamwork, games, and multimedia learning.
Skillz for Life has been developed in partnership with National Star College and Speak; an advocacy group of young disabled people who are delivering the training. The scheme follows an accredited independent living skills course outline.
