Farington Philip flip flops his bike from Scarborough to Southport for Whizz-Kidz

On the 6th August 2011, Philip Jones from Farington, Lancashire, cycled 150 miles from Scarborough to Southport to raise money for the children’s charity Whizz-Kidz – but with a self-imposed twist. Philip rode the entire arduous journey on his single-speed bike, wearing a pair of flip flops – no mean feat over Yorkshire’s hilly landscape and battling continuous rain!

Philip completed his charity challenge in 15 hours, after setting off from Scarborough at 4.30am. He has beaten his initial target of £500, and is asking generous members of the community to help him raise even more, so that Whizz-Kidz can support local young disabled people get moving …

Whizz-Kidz welcomes new patient choice

We were heartened to see Health Secretary Andrew Lansley announce (last year on 19 July 2011), that children’s wheelchair services are to be one of eight key areas  in which patients will be able to choose the provider best-placed to meet their individual needs (a policy known as “any qualified provider” or AQP) – to come into effect April 2012.

Giving young wheelchair users the choice to be referred to providers like Whizz-Kidz (we were even mentioned in the Department of Health’s press release) will help transform the lives of hundreds more children and young people in the UK who are waiting to …

Molson Coors gives budding designer work experience in Burton

Molson Coors (UK) has provided an ambassador of charity partner Whizz-Kidz new skills in graphic design and marketing – in a work placement breaking barriers to employment and opportunity.

Steve Kerrison, 17, uses a powered wheelchair due to his muscular dystrophy, and spent a week working at Molson Coors (UK) HQ in Burton. He said:

“I learned to use various graphics programmes, and it increased my confidence in my work, as well as my ability to communicate with others. I was shown how to create a brand and poster adverts; and even given a brief to create my own as a challenge!

“The Molson Coors placement was a magnificent opportunity. …

Cash for Kids and Whizz-kidz Team up for Three Peaks Challenge

Cash for Kids – the official charity of 96.3 radioaire, Viking FM and Magic 1161 which supports thousands of local children – is this year raising money for Whizz-Kidz. Together they are looking for adventurers to join them on the Three Peaks Challenge, scaling the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales.

Taking place over the 9th and 11th of September, the actor James Thornton -  who plays John Barton in Emmerdale – and some of his fellow cast members will be amongst the charity trekkers.
