Whizz-Kidz is about giving disabled children and young people the independence to enjoy an active childhood – at home, at school and at play.
By providing them with customised mobility equipment, training, advice and life skills, we actually give them something much more important; the independence to be themselves. Children and young people are at the heart of our work. By putting their needs and the needs of their family first, we make a powerful and life changing difference to their lives.
We focus on each disabled child’s individual needs, taking into account their clinical, social, educational and developmental needs - all of which are important in any young person’s life. Being independent and in control of when and where you want to go takes young disabled people from isolation to inclusion and gives them the chance to enjoy a more active childhood and realise their true potential.
Disabled children have virtually no chance of getting a powered wheelchair on the NHS and the service we provide has an enormous impact on young people’s lives. We work with local NHS wheelchair services to joint fund mobility equipment where possible, but our goal is to build more strategic partnerships with them so that we can pool our expertise and resources and help many more children. Our recently launched three year pilot partnership with Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust aims to deliver an enhanced service for children in the borough and London wide. We also campaign for children with disability to raise awareness of the importance of mobility. Our goal is to ensure the Government and the statutory services improve services so that every disabled child gets the right mobility equipment at the right time. Since Whizz-Kidz was set up in 1990 the charity has changed the lives of over 4,500 young disabled people and has become the UK’s leading children’s mobility charity.
