Student Volunteering Week 2018 is over but this does not mean the conversation around volunteers needs to come to an end. We are always looking for new people to join our volunteer team and below we discuss why now is the perfect time to be a student volunteer at Whizz-Kid!

Your student years are supposed to be the time of your life as we are constantly reminded. Friendships, parties, and more independence. What else could you ask for?  However your student years are also the perfect time to do things for others as well as yourself. As you get older and take on more responsibilities you will realise that it becomes more and more difficult to juggle your personal duties.

There are many reasons as to why you may want to think about being a volunteer whilst you are studying at college or university. For some people, it’s the perfect opportunity to give something back to the community and make a big difference to those around them. For others it gives them the chance to develop new skills or build upon existing experience and knowledge. When students decide to volunteer at Whizz-Kidz we like to make sure the experience is mutually beneficial. We offer a range of volunteering opportunities from working in the head office to being more hands on and volunteering at a local club, which will give you an opportunity to work with our young people. Whichever opportunity you decide to take, the most important things are that you find the experience rewarding and challenging. Below we list the top 5 reasons volunteers have chosen to offer their time to Whizz-Kidz

1) You can help and make a real difference

Unfortunately sometimes when people go to volunteer they end up leaving not feeling like they’ve made a real impact. Fortunately, when students offer their time to Whizz-Kidz this is never the case. Rest assured whether you are working with the comms team on branding in the head office or attending a local club, engaging with activities that encourage young people to build upon their life skills, you can guarantee that your expertise, talents and interests will be put to good use. Elinor from Wales has said ‘The best thing about Whizz Kidz is watching our young people’s confidence grow and having a real laugh at every event. Volunteering for Whizz Kidz has enabled me to meet lots of new people and experience new things which has increased my own confidence, but at the same time I see the confidence growing of the kids around me. I look forward to every event and always thoroughly enjoy my time spent with Whizz Kidz.‘

2) It’s an experience to put on your CV

It’s okay to say it. Volunteering should be mutually beneficial. It doesn’t matter what kind of volunteering you undertake, with Whizz-Kidz, you will find it an excellent opportunity to build your CV and show future employers that you are proactive. Doing unpaid work is a good way to show your drive and tenacity, and will definitely help throughout your career. Paige, California ‘My University helped to arrange this volunteering opportunity for me and it has been great so far. I have learnt so much, more than I expected and I can’t wait to take these new skills with me back to University in America’

3) Learn new skills

When doing volunteering it is very likely you’ll be asked to try new things or be put in situations that you haven’t been in before. If you’re volunteering is in our head office, you may be in charge of answering the phone and dealing with queries that may at first be new to you. This will help build your communication skills in a professional setting. This is something that that every career out there demands. If you choose to volunteer at one of our fundraising events such as London marathon or Ride London, you will be actively involved in boosting team morale and this sort of positive attitude is something that can easily be used in future endeavours. Mary, California ‘I am studying social work and social care back in America and I want to work with young people with disabilities in the future. Being at Whizz-Kidz has opened my eyes to some of the skills I’d need for my career in the future. It has been a really good stepping stone for me.’

4)  Stress reliever

As a student you are often put under a lot of pressure when it comes to everything from exams, to coursework to finances. Sometimes volunteering for a few hours every week can be the perfect get away that you need to take your mind of any issues that are getting to you abit down’ Millie, London ‘I can say that volunteering with Whizz-Kidz as a student is amazing. The people you get to meet and the opportunities that arise are fantastic. I volunteered as a sixth form student and now as a first year university student and I know any weekend that I have with Whizz-Kidz will be a good one! Volunteering is a great way to take time out from studying and whatever the club has planned it will always be a really fun day. I’ve been able to have some great experiences with Whizz-Kidz and cannot wait to continue to do have more.’

5) Volunteering is fun

Probably the most important one of all! If you are a student taking time away from your studies, it is very unlikely that you want to dedicate more time to something which is only going to stress you out or get you down. This is why volunteering at Whizz-Kidz is the perfect opportunity. We have amazing staff, young people and your fellow volunteers are great (without sounding too big-headed.) You will always be welcomes on board and guaranteed a few laughs. It is the perfect chance to have fun and share great stories!
