Nathan

Hello, my name is Nathan.

I am a 14 year old boy who likes watching and playing sport, especially football, as well as playing computer games. The only difference is that my legs and arms don’t work as well as other children. That’s why I needed the help and support of Whizz-Kidz.

I have a powered wheelchair. This is really great.

As I cannot self propel a manual wheelchair, my powered wheelchair allows me to go where I want to go. This means that at school, I can get around by myself, which is really important to me because I don’t like having others push me around where they want …

Rowan and Thomas

Posted on March 25th, 2007

Rowan and Thomas from Bristol are lively brothers, aged 9 and 5, who like playing on their computer games, watching films and looking after their three dogs.

To see the boys you would not know that they have a severe condition, but the internal damage that’s caused when they walk is irreversible. They both have a rare genetic condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type 3 – which their mother also has. Walking creates internal bleeding and the bones in their feet are gradually crumbling away. Their feet look bruised but the boys feel no pain as their sensation is badly affected; so they simply continue to walk unaware …

Megan is a lively twelve year old from Edinburgh who loves drawing, holidaying in Florida, socialising with her friends and collecting toy fairies. She has Spina Bifida which means that she has no lower body mobility at all.

Megan’s local NHS wheelchair service provided her with a bulky, heavy manual wheelchair which Megan found extremely difficult to self propel and left her feeling very tired. For Megan this was very frustrating as she couldn’t keep up with her friends and had to rely on other people to push her around.

Her family applied to Whizz-Kidz for a lighter wheelchair that would give Megan much more freedom. Whizz-Kidz provided a …

9 year-old Brigit participated in Whizz-Kidz’ wheelchair skills training in Newcastle.

Brigit has Cerebral Palsy and uses a powered wheelchair to get around. She enjoys swimming and horse riding but came along to wheelchair training because she wanted to build her confidence and be more independent, as well as to make some new friends.

Brigit uses a communication aid to help her communicate with others. She joined in with the training activities and very quickly became a great asset to the group.

Brigit’s wheelchair skills visibly improved at each training session. Stewart, the trainer said,
“By the end of the programme Brigit had better spatial awareness, control, and route planning …

Tayla and Jordan

Tayla and Jordan are brother and sister, aged 14 and 12. They both use powered wheelchairs to get around. Tayla enjoys horse riding and music, whilst Jordan likes swimming and playing on his play station. Both of them attended our wheelchair training programme in Northolt.

Tayla and Jordan both wanted to improve their driving skills and hazard awareness, particularly as a new school environment had made Jordan a little nervous about using his powered wheelchair.

The training gave them the chance to practice using their wheelchairs and meet other young wheelchair users, which their mum saw as a great benefit:
“It helps them to realise that they are not the only ones …
