Whizz-Kidz fundraiser wins Sports Tours International NYC package competition
Whizz-Kidz fundraiser Adele Young, 32, of Maidenhead, won a Sports Tours International competition for an all-inclusive New York Marathon package – by recounting an amusing tale about her fundraising.
Yahoo account manager Adele told how she once stood on the platform at London’s Paddington railway station in a cheerleader’s outfit and wearing yellow tights…as commuters streamed by throwing quips and comments her way.
She explained: “I commute into London everyday and always see people at the station trying to raise money for charity. I just wanted to stand out.
“A friend suggested we raise money wearing the cheerleading costumers which matched the colours of my chosen charity, Whizz-Kidz. The yellow tights were an addition due to the freezing temperatures that day – but they certainly got me noticed!”
Alex Barclay, Events Fundraiser at the charity said: “Adele has won the full monty: flights, hotel, transfers, race entry and the company of a team of Sports Tours International reps to help out while she’s there! We are delighted to have Adele running for Whizz-Kidz once again – we’ll be there cheering her on!”
Judge for the competition, Marathon running legend Ron Hill gave Adele some key tips: “Congratulations to Adele. She should take it really easy at the start of the New York Marathon. It is seriously uphill! She should go out beforehand and identify some landmarks along the course, preferably every five miles, to help get her pace right.”
Adele recently took part in the 2010 London Marathon finishing in four hours and 45 minutes, raising £6,000 pounds for Whizz-Kidz. She will spend three nights in New York giving her plenty of time to take in the sights of the Big Apple – before competing on Sunday November 7.
She added: “It has been my dream for some time now to run in both the London and New York Marathons. I can’t believe I am going to run both in the same year!”
