We know that often the best advice comes from chatting to other families. Whizz-Kidz is passionate about bringing families together in an online and offline community so parents don't ever have to feel alone.
Amanda is mum to Ciara who is eight years old and struggled to get the right wheelchair for her on the NHS. Ciara has Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT) a progressive condition which affects the nerves outside Ciara’s brain and spine. Amanda and Ciara live at home in Nottinghamshire.
‘I think I am lucky. I understand that raising a disabled child can become quite isolating, but I have a lot of support from family and friends. Ciara’s school and SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) are also very helpful and I have support from local parents and organisations. There is so much you pick up from simply talking to others. It is so valuable.
‘Whizz-Kidz changed my family’s life the second we received Ciara’s powered wheelchair. She is now far more independent and it also gives our family more freedom. Every day things, that should have been simple but weren’t, suddenly became less challenging again when we got her new chair. For example, we can nip to the shops together, Ciara can go around on her own because I don’t have to push her anymore and I can get what I need. Having the right equipment from Whizz-Kidz makes our weekly shop a lot less stressful!
‘There are six children in our house, so there is rarely a quiet moment, but sometimes, as a parent you have to make time for yourself to recharge the batteries.
‘Having a Whizz-Kidz Parents Network is brilliant. A forum for support and advice will be so useful for so many people. ‘
