We know that often the best advice comes from chatting to other families. Whizz-Kidz is passionate about bringing families together in an online and offline community so parents don't ever have to feel alone.
Jo is mum to Lucy, an 11-year-old Whizz-Kidz Ambassador who has a spinal cord condition and uses a manual wheelchair. Jo and Lucy live with the rest of their family in West Sussex.
Jo, Lucy’s mum says:
‘Unless you have a disabled child, you don’t realise how life consuming it can be, but we are a positive family and we focus on the things we can do together. When we are at home Lucy is very independent and can care for herself entirely, but if we go out she is dependent on us. The thing we find most difficult and consumes most of our time is finding information on places to go on holiday that all of us will enjoy.
‘We heard about Whizz-Kidz through our Occupational Therapist. Whizz-Kidz has really helped Lucy with socialising. Lucy has made friends with other wheelchair users in our local area. It is amazing to see her play with friends and for her to not feel different. Whizz-Kidz has helped create a positive environment for Lucy to grow and develop.
‘In a way we’ve lived our lives in denial of Lucy’s condition – as a family we all enjoy sailing and canoeing. My husband is qualified in these sports so Lucy has a lot of opportunities to spread her wings on the water. Lucy leads a very busy and active life as well as Whizz-Kidz, she is in a Girl Guiding pack and goes on days out. As Lucy’s confidence grows she doesn’t shy away from new opportunities. There are some accessible trails near our home and Lucy has an electric hand bike, she also swims and rides once a week.
‘As a family we all work together to ensure that Lucy is encouraged to lead an active childhood just like other children.’
