Training experiences

Jason Felce

Jason Felce is 10 years old and lives in Milton Keynes. Lorna, Jason’s mum, told us about Jason’s experience at Wheelchair Skills Training at Aylesbury in July 2008:

"Jason has severe quadriplegic athetoid cerebral palsy. He has weak muscles, tightness in all four limbs and poor motor control. Jason has difficulty controlling the movement of his limbs and his mouth and tongue.

He got a new powered wheelchair chair in February 2008 and wasn’t confident in it because he hadn’t had much time to practice. He is very willing and eager to please but gets excited and sometimes his arms are a little ‘wild’ which makes him cross.  I just wanted him to feel more confident in his new chair.

Jason attended Wheelchair Skills Training where he hung on every word the trainer said! He is very disabled and struggles to keep calm sometimes but Mike the trainer was really patient and really kept him cool. I was there and saw Jason leap forward in what he can do. He surprised himself and this made him really happy. His older brother, Matthew, attended the scheme on one of the days and was impressed with Jason’s improvement. Compliments from older brother Matthew really boosted Jason’s self-esteem and the certificate he received also made him feel really proud.

It was good for Jason to work along side other disabled children and see what they could do and see that they too have difficulties. It was a safe, fun environment for him to really go for it. As Jason's mum, I enjoyed the chance to be with other parents and socialise at the same time.

Because of the scheme Jason has learnt how to stay calm and slow down. He knows it’s ok to take his time if he’s struggling and he can really control his chair now. We’re really happy!"

As an ambassador I am able to make people aware of the charity. I want to let people know how a wheelchair can change the life of a disabled person and make their life better
