As part of our Raising Awareness in Parliament strategy four Whizz-Kidz Ambassadors came to spend a couple of hours talking to MP’s from the Yorkshire and Humber region. Summer Almond, George Fielding, Nathan Mattick and Jack Pegram talked to the MP’s about their equipment and how it has changed their lives. All the MP’s were very impressed with the Ambassadors and five of them have now signed up to be Whizz-Kidz Champions in Parliament with more meetings to follow.
On April 17th the Whizz-Kidz Kidz Board met with Alan Johnson MP and Secretary of State for Health to ask about wheelchair provision, waiting times and the Child Health Strategy. The Kidz Board are keen campaigners and saw this as a great opportunity to let Mr Johnson know about their experiences and what needs to change in paediatric wheelchair services.
In a recent report published by the Treasury and Department for Education, 'Aiming High for Disabled Children' the Government announced a radical reform of the way that wheelchairs and other types of equipment are provided to families with disabled children.
The Government pledged more funding in order to maximise a child’s mobility; speed up access to essential mobility equipment, prevent deterioration of conditions; and ensure that the social and educational, as well as the clinical needs of young wheelchair users are being met.
We are urging the Department of Health and the Department for Children, Schools and Families to ensure that the reform of the wheelchair service meets the full development needs of disabled children - so that all who need it can get the right wheelchair early in life. Additional funding is needed to make this a reality.
Being an ambassador enables me to spread the word about this great opportunity and tell people how having my wheelchair has made a difference for me especially since starting university
