Volunteer Successes
Soo Lo recently volunteered for Whizz-Kidz. Here she tells us about her experiences with the charity and the huge impact working with our young people had on her life.
I wanted a challenge outside of my life working as a P.A and set myself the goal of securing a volunteering job. After browsing a few sites I stumbled across Whizz-Kidz and decided to send my application in. My volunteering journey had begun!
I was enlisted to help out at a Wheelchair Skills Training Scheme in Birmingham. Twelve children participated in the scheme, over a course of six sessions. They are all different ages, religion, race, and had different disabilities- but all came with a common purpose: to be independent!
The supporting team was formed of volunteers (like myself) teachers and Whizz-Kidz staff – without them the scheme could not have taken place.
One of the first activities the kids were given was to control their chairs across different surfaces and through various obstacles. I was worried that as they were young, they may become frustrated if they were unable to do it. However, nothing could stop these kids moving forward! Their performance was really beyond my expectations – not only did they complete the task but with great success.
Day 2 was packed full of excitement! As well as indoor activities, we took the young people outdoors to experience real life situations. Three representatives from Birmingham Council came along to teach the children about road safety. We all put on our Hi-Vis jackets and were ready for the challenges ahead!
The young people had to manoeuvre down ramps, practice all the skills they had learnt thus far on the scheme, and practice crossing at the zebra crossing using the golden rules of Stop-Look-Listen!
It was so much fun to meet new people and learn new skills, working as a team. The young people’s performances really amazed me and I was so impressed by what they achieved.
Whizz-Kidz is doing a brilliant job to bring a bright future to disabled children and young people by providing them with advice, equipment and services.
Just like their slogan says- Move a life forward! Just a couple of hours of your time will not only have a huge impact on the young people’s lives but also on your own development. This volunteering job is priceless and the experience has really enhanced my life.
I’ve decided to volunteer for the next scheme as well- why not join the team today? Don’t just think, act now.
