Christopher

Fifteen year old Christopher lives with his mum, dad and sister in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan.

Christopher is an active young man who enjoys swimming and fundraising for his local community. He has Stickler Syndrome which, in Christopher’s case, means he can only walk short distances and frequently gets pain in his joints which inhibit his movement dramatically. Recently he has had several operations on his eyes as his vision is also affected by his condition.

Even though Christopher can be in quite a lot of pain with his condition, he likes to be as independent as possible, especially when going to mainstream school. The wheelchair given to him by the NHS did not allow him to be independent at all, as it was too big for the classroom and too heavy for him to use on his own. This meant he had to be pushed about by an adult and the last thing any fifteen year old boy wants is to have an adult hanging around him all the time!

Whizz-Kidz were able to provide Christopher with a ‘Kushall’ lightweight manual wheelchair, which means he no longer has to have someone with him everywhere he goes and can have the independence that all teenagers need and want.

Christopher’s mum says:

“The new wheelchair has made a heck of a difference to Christopher’s quality of life. For one thing he’s able to get around on his own so much more and he’s always keen to get more involved in helping charities. The new wheelchair means he can take part in more wheelchair races and sponsored walks.”

Christopher says:

“I’m over the moon with the new wheelchair, it looks so cool and is so much easier to handle. I leave school this year and the ‘chair’ will allow me to get around college on my own – I want to study to be a dentist, I can’t wait!”
