Duncan
Duncan is a bright seventeen year old studying Social Science who would like to work in government when he’s qualified.
During his leisure time his two main interests are politics and watching all sport. Duncan, who’s from Scotland has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, commonly known as Brittle Bone Disease which means he is unable to walk and needs a wheelchair to get around.
Duncan’s local NHS wheelchair service provided him with a basic powered wheelchair but it wasn’t very comfortable and he found it wasn’t sturdy enough to use outdoors over uneven terrain. Duncan wanted a wheelchair that he could use everywhere and that fitted him better, so he applied to Whizz-Kidz.
Whizz-Kidz delivered a “Hippo” powered wheelchair with two special features – a tilt-in-space and riser. The tilt-in-space function means Duncan can change his position if he gets uncomfortable and the riser means he can now reach different levels during class. His new wheelchair is much sturdier and it means he can go anywhere he wants.
Duncan comments:
“My new wheelchair has given me so much more freedom – I can go up and down curbs now without worrying. It’s meant that I can go out and about much more to meet my friends whether it’s to the cinema or the pub. I’ve so much more confidence now as I really do have the independence to do what I want”
