James
James is four years old and lives with his mum, dad and older brother in London.
James has Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. For James this means he has a lot of uncontrolled movements. He is able to walk short distances inside with the aid of a walker but has to be pushed in a manual wheelchair outside. Inside the house he mainly crawls to get around as this is easiest for him.
The family are very active and enjoy being outdoors together. James goes to watch his brother play football and would really like to join in with him. His favourite pastimes are going to the park, the cinema, bowling and swimming. Already, at four years old, James wants to get out and about and be as independent as he can.
Their local NHS wheelchair service provided James with an indoor powered wheelchair, but this meant James could only use it over even ground and was too restricting for a four year old.
Whizz-Kidz provided James with a ‘Hippo’ powered wheelchair that will give him full independent mobility, particularly outside. It has large front drive wheels to allow him to get across the football pitch and through the woods. It also has supportive seating to allow him to concentrate on making precise movements with the joystick without having to worry too much about the rest of his body.
James’ mum, Yvonne, comments:
”His new wheelchair is great as he can go anywhere in it. We love going on holiday to visit my relatives in Ireland and now that James can join us on trips in the countryside we are delighted”
