Steven

Steven is an outgoing teenager who loves football and his PlayStation.

Stephen, from Edinburgh, has Muscular Dystrophy which means he has weak muscles, constant back pain and is unable to walk.

His local NHS wheelchair service provided him with a basic powered wheelchair, but Stephen found it extremely uncomfortable as he was unable to change position to help ease his back pain. This meant attending school was very difficult as he could only stay in his wheelchair for ten minutes at a time before he needed to lie down.

Stephen needed a wheelchair that he could recline in but his local wheelchair service was unable to provide this. His family applied to Whizz-Kidz who provided him with a powered wheelchair with a tilt-in-space function, allowing Stephen to lie down flat in his wheelchair at any time.

This has made an enormous difference for Stephen as he can now stay in his wheelchair for over two hours at a time, making school much easier and allowing him to watch a football match the whole way through! Stephen loves going to school now, as he doesn’t have to keep leaving his classes. His ambition is to be a games designer when he grows up.

Stephen’s mum, Julie, comments:

“Stephen’s new ‘Hippo’ wheelchair has really changed his life as, not only is he in less pain (due to being able to lie flat whenever he wants to) but it also means we don’t have to constantly help him in and out of his wheelchair. He used to hate us having to help him all the time, but he loves his Whizz-Kidz wheelchair and the freedom he has now”
