Tayla and Jordan
Tayla and Jordan are brother and sister, aged 14 and 12. They both use powered wheelchairs to get around. Tayla enjoys horse riding and music, whilst Jordan likes swimming and playing on his play station. Both of them attended our wheelchair training programme in Northolt.
Tayla and Jordan both wanted to improve their driving skills and hazard awareness, particularly as a new school environment had made Jordan a little nervous about using his powered wheelchair.
The training gave them the chance to practice using their wheelchairs and meet other young wheelchair users, which their mum saw as a great benefit:
“It helps them to realise that they are not the only ones using wheelchairs and watching others making the same mistakes gives them the confidence to try.”
She adds:
“There was a fun atmosphere – like a play scheme for wheelchair users and Jordan is now driving himself around much more. Tayla’s steering has also become much more accurate, particularly in busy areas.”
But the best part of the week was the opportunity for Tayla and Jordan to try a new sport – power chair football. Coach Nicky introduced them to the sport during their wheelchair training and now both Tayla and Jordan train regularly with Aspire Hotspur and travel across England to attend matches.
Their experience at Whizz-Kidz’ wheelchair training has meant they not only learnt new mobility skills and increased their confidence, but also have loads of fun in a new sport they love.
