Whizz-Kidz statement on the Lamb Report on SEN – 16 December 2009

Disabled children’s charity Whizz-Kidz welcomes the Lamb report on the current SEN system, and Rt Hon Ed Balls’ response. In particular we are pleased to see the DCSF promise further investment in an upcoming project to tackle SEN and disability related bullying, and the move to include schools in the DDA duty to provide auxiliary aids and services to young disabled people.

Whizz-Kidz is currently carrying out its own Schools Consultation – an England wide survey of disabled children and young people about their experiences of school life.

Early feedback indicates that the bullying of disabled young people is an all too frequent experience. We also have anecdotal testimony from our own beneficiaries that access to specialised equipment would greatly enhance the inclusion and equality of disabled pupils in mainstream education.

There is still time for disabled children and young people to have their say in our schools survey – the deadline to respond is April 9 2010. Click here.
Notes
Whizz-Kidz has changed the lives of over 7,500 disabled children since 1990 – often literally overnight. The charity supports young people to access the right mobility equipment, including powered wheelchairs, at the right time. Whizz-Kidz also delivers wheelchair skills-training and other life-skills to help their transition from childhood to adulthood.

There are still over 70,000 children in the UK who need our support. Find out more and help move a life forward visit: www.whizz-kidz.org.uk

The right wheelchair and mobility equipment is not automatically provided on the NHS, and disabled young people have virtually no chance of getting a powered wheelchair. Whizz-Kidz aims to joint-fund mobility equipment where possible with local NHS services, and aims to ensure that much-needed improvements are made in delivering wheelchair services for children in the UK.
