Whizz-Kidz’ Rebecca advises on access

The role of a Whizz-Kidz Ambassador can lead to lots exciting opportunities, such as local campaigning, meeting with a local MP, and consulting on access to towns and services.

Kidz Board Vice Chair, Rebecca, was asked by her local Debenhams shopping centre in Newcastle to consult on their access for wheelchair-users last month, and here’s what she found.

“I loved my day at Debenhams. The store manager Daniel was really friendly and enthusiastic in his pledge to take action on any changes to the store layout that I suggested.

“I was mostly impressed with the spaciousness of the store, and suggested only a few slight changes. I was struck by how massive and stylish the disabled changing rooms were, but looking more closely, I identified a few ways in which the layout of the rooms could be made even better and more accessible.

“The staff were so helpful and I was very impressed with the customer service. I really enjoyed the day as it was something I’d not had the chance to do before – and it was really strange scaling four floors of a store without actually doing any shopping!

“It was hard work so I was quite tired by the end but I had a lot of fun and would definitely welcome the opportunity to do something similar again.”
