Team Whizz-Kidz, we salute you! London Marathon 2011
Wow. Around 500 of you pounded London’s winding pavements and roads, in surprisingly hot conditions, all for Whizz-Kidz yesterday – and we thank every single one of you.
You’re the lifeblood of an annual fundraising event that raises in excess of £1m for us each year – allowing us to support thousands of children and young people become independently mobile.
London Marathon is a special event for us, we were born from it in a way – when our founder took part to raise money to buy a little girl a powered wheelchair, over twenty years ago. We were also the official London Marathon charity in 1999.
You continue our strong legacy with what remains the world’s largest charity fundraising event.
Well done and thank you.
Take a look at some of this year’s photos – can you spot yourself?
Here’s some audio of Abi Griffiths (pictured above), sports presenter – and gadget expert from BBC 2′s Something For The Weekend – talking about her Marathon for Whizz-Kidz. Abi stormed her Marathon in 3hrs, 39mins. (Note: the interview cuts out at a bit abruptly – audioboo only records for five minutes!).
Then there was Mark Rhodes, one half of Sam & Mark, who was running for Whizz-Kidz in memory of his nephew Tom Robbins who received a powered wheelchair from the charity. Mark pushed past the finish line at 4hrs,47mins.
And John Sanford-Hart, an amputee, broke the record for fastest Marathon using crutches. Amazing stuff!
