Whizz-Kidz first ever Nightwalk – a Neon success!
If you happened to see a sea of green Whizz-Kidz t-shirts, glo-sticks, neon tutus, facepaint and wigs adorning some night-time walkers in London on Friday night, then you saw something very exciting – the first ever Whizz-Kidz Neon Nightwalk!
Over 100 people took to the streets of the capital in neon fancy dress, led by eight Whizz-Kidz young ambassadors, to ‘glo the extra mile’ for Whizz-Kidz. Taking on either 10 or 20 miles of London, these walkers not only pounded the pavements, but also tackled their tiredness as they walked through the night.
The event was launched by Whizz-Kidz patrons Sam & Mark, who gave a very personal speech about their involvement with Whizz-Kidz and encouraged the walkers on their way.
Sam & Mark added:
“We were so proud as Whizz-Kidz Patrons to launch their first event Neon Nightwalk. As a cause close to both our hearts, it was fantastic to meet more inspiring young people – getting on with being kids thanks to the support the charity gives them. It was fun to join in, wear a bit of eighties face paint, and walk a mile so others can get mobile!”
Leading the walk were eight young people – Alec, Arunima, Ben, George, Katie, Nathan, Rebecca and Robyn. All of these youngsters have benefited from a range of Whizz-Kidz services, from receiving mobility equipment to attending Wheelchair Skills Training sessions and Camp Whizz-Kidz, and feel passionately about the importance of raising money and awareness for their charity.
Having been involved at every stage of the Neon Nightwalk, this unique event put our ambassadors at its heart and empowered them to change the lives of other kids like them through supporting and leading the walkers.
Everyone took on their first mile all together along with the brilliant Sam & Mark who provided a rallying spirit and fun along the way. After reaching first milestone, the Globe Theatre, a team photo and a huge cheer for Whizz-Kidz, the walkers set off into the night ahead.
Whizz-Kidz rest stations were positioned along the route for a snack and a drink to boost the walkers along their way, and walkers continued on through the small hours and into the eventual sunrise. Our first walkers finished the 20 miles at a very impressive 1.30am, with our final finishers at 7.30am.
The walkers’ epic journey passed some of the capital’s brightest landmarks, including Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace.
Event organisers, Alex Barclay and Jess Leigh said, “the dedication of these walkers was incredible. Walking 10 or 20 miles is a tough enough challenge, but walking through the night makes it so much tougher. Their fundraising will help change the lives of disabled young people like our incredible ambassadors who led and inspired the walk”.
Well done and thank you to all who took part, and a special thanks to our young ambassadors for inspiring and supporting the walkers along their way.
