Caerleon Fair supports disabled Welsh youngsters

Kate Dibble from St Julians Newport, is the proud event organiser for a new calendar event for Caerleon – The Caerleon Christmas Craft Fair, taking place between 11am and 3.30pm on Sunday 4 December in Caerleon Town Hall.

As Christmas is a time for giving, Kate decided to partner the event with Whizz-Kidz – a charity that supports disabled children with wheelchairs and training –  and to help raise funds for young disabled people’s mobility.

Kate says “This really is an event set to bring the community together and I’m delighted to be working in partnership with Whizz-Kidz, a charity that is currently making a huge difference to disabled children acrossWalesand who need more volunteers to support them.”

Kate, a first time event organiser, managed to fill over 20 stalls in the first seven days of advertising the event to South Walescraft businesses ranging from soft furnishings, ceramics, wood turning and glass beads being sold by 6th Form students from St Josephs School. One of these stalls will also sell hand made Christmas cards – lovingly home-made by schoolchildren to help Whizz-Kidz raise money.

Ruth Henley, Regional Fundraiser Wales for Whizz-Kidz states “This will be our first community fundraising event for the Gwent area and we’re excited! Whizz-Kidz has been helping disabled children throughoutWalessince it started in 1990, but we’re increasing our fundraising presence withinWalesto meet the growing demand for our services. We are currently looking to recruit volunteer fundraisers including in local schools, places of work and businesses. Your support will ensure that every child with mobility needs has the chance to be something special…a kid like any other.”

Kate adds “I hope that by supporting Whizz-Kidz in this way will help raise awareness of this worthy cause, create new opportunities for Whizz-Kidz and attract new supporters to the charity.”

Whizz-Kidz currently support over 60 children living in Wales who regularly attend Ambassador Clubs in Cardiff, Swansea, Merthyr Tydfil and Bangor – set to make new friends, have fun and look forward to a bright future.

To volunteer or donate, please contact Ruth Henley or call 02920 497438.

The right wheelchair and mobility equipment is not automatically provided on the NHS, and it is virtually impossible for a young disabled person to get a powered wheelchair. Whizz-Kidz’s FastForward campaign is calling on Government to reform young people’s wheelchair services. www.whizz-kidz.org.uk/fastforward.

The charity supports young people to access the right mobility equipment – including powered wheelchairs – at the right time; and delivers wheelchair skills-training, work placements, and other life-skills to help their transition from childhood to adulthood. There are still over 70,000 children in the UK who need our support.
  • Whizz-Kidz aims to joint-fund mobility equipment where possible with local NHS services, and aims to ensure that much-needed improvements are made in delivering wheelchair services for children in the UK.
