Our Charity of the Year partnership with international asset management firm BlackRock raised nearly £350,000 in 2012/13, more than double the original target.

During September 2012 – September 2013, BlackRock aimed to raise £150,000 for Whizz-Kidz. But in fact, inspired by the cause and through impressive dedication they far exceeded their original target.

Fundraising activities

The launch events in both the Edinburgh and London offices together raised nearly £10,000 right at the start of the partnership.

One of the highlights of the various activities was a ‘Guess the Price of my Wheelchair’ competition. Several of our young Whizz-Kidz Ambassadors attended the event, offering a really engaging way for BlackRock staff to interact directly with some of the disabled children that Whizz-Kidz helps, and inspiring hundreds of them to enter the competition and make donations.

Money continued to be raised throughout the year from a huge range of memorable fundraising events and activities, including: a huge 50-strong London Marathon team, an Edinburgh to London cycle ride and a very popular Business Operations team Race Night, as well as various on-going office fundraising through bake sales, dress-down days, quiz nights, raffles and sweepstakes.

Partnership impacts

BlackRock’s support had an immediate impact on changing the lives of disabled children and young people. Some of the funds raised at the partnership launch were used to supply a wheelchair for a young person who had been on our waiting list. Neil has cerebral palsy and the NHS manual wheelchair he had been using left him completely reliant on his parents or teachers pushing him around. As a vocal 18 year-old with a strong sense of his own mind, this had left him frustrated and feeling shut out from the life he wanted to be leading. Neil and his family want to say a huge thank you to BlackRock for transforming his life – literally overnight.

Promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace

Our partnership benefitted BlackRock as a company as well as helping disabled children and young people, and these benefits continue to have a positive and lasting impact. Our close collaboration with BlackRock’s Diversity and Inclusion team led to improvements in accessibility around their London head office, increased staff confidence and knowledge when interacting with disabled colleagues and visitors, and provided work placement opportunities.

A huge thank you

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at BlackRock who helped us reach this fantastic amount. Your support really has made huge difference to Neil, and many other disabled children around the UK.
