The Southern Co-operative have raises over half a million pounds to support young people across the south of England

Colleagues at The Southern Co-operative selected Whizz-Kidz as their chosen charity for April 2014-April 2016. As an independent co-operative owned by their 150,000 members, the business includes neighbourhood food stores and funeral branches across southern England. During our partnership their 4,000 colleagues came together to raise money and awareness of Whizz-Kidz in their communities.

The funds raised are helping us to deliver our Life Journey services across the counties where The Southern Co-operative operates, enabling us to provide life-changing mobility equipment, run Ambassador Clubs, Wheelchair Skills Training, residential Camps and much more for local young people.

Partnership Engagement

Fundraising got off to a flying start in July 2014 during The Southern Co-operative’s annual Charity Awareness Week, which saw colleagues across the business ‘Going Green’ to raise funds. A huge range of activities took place, from cake sales and raffles, sponsored cycles and fancy dress days in store to giving up social media and gadgets for a day. 2015's event saw an even bigger effort from stores and branches across the south, and raised a fantastic £15,000 in one week.

Colleagues have also taken on running events, skydives, nightwalks, zip wires and many more challenges for Whizz-Kidz. The company's food stores have also sold a special promotional gift item in the lead up to Christmas in both 2014 and 2015, encouraging customers to purchase a soft toys or biscuit gift tins as stocking fillers and support Whizz-Kidz in the process.

As well as fundraising, their Co-operative Independent Living business, has been working with our Kidz Board to test some of their products and get feedback on the kind of products that could help young wheelchair users to be more independent as they transition to adulthood.

Gemma Lacey, Director of Sustainability and Communications at The Southern Co-operative said: “The brilliant work that Whizz-Kidz does really struck a chord with us. Thanks to the generosity of colleagues, members, customers and suppliers, our partnership with Whizz Kidz is well underway; their enthusiasm for our charity partner is infectious and we plan to keep this momentum going with a host of different activities and support!”

Thank you to everyone at The Southern Co-operative for your support, we have really enjoyed a fantastic partnership and your support is making a huge difference to the lives of disabled children and their families in your local communities.
