Life Skills
Life skills are an essential part of any young person’s development. Our Ambassador Network, Life Skills Programme and work placement schemes support young disabled people to gain the confidence and skills they need to lead independent lives and look forward to a bright future.
Ambassador Network
Disabled children and young people all around the country have joined our growing network of young Ambassadors. Ambassadors play an active role in the charity’s work, attend their local Ambassador club, and get the chance to take part in training and events which help them gain essential life skills – all while making friends and having fun. And by joining the network they can get involved in their very own campaigns.
We currently have over 500 Ambassadors with local clubs in:
Aberdeen
Belfast
Birmingham
Cardiff
Exeter
Glasgow
Guildford
Manchester
Newcastle
Norwich
Nottingham
Sheffield
Tower Hamlets
And over the next two years we are setting up many more clubs – so watch this space!
Kidz Board
Our network of young people is led by our Kidz Board, a group of 12 beneficiaries aged between 13 and 18, who come from all over the UK.
In recent years the Kidz Board, who meet four times a year, has become a very influential group. The Board is focused on discussing decisions facing the charity and raising awareness about issues that affect them everyday. Aside from meetings, the Kidz Board also attend events, give media interviews and campaign to make a real difference to their lives and the lives of other disabled children.
Work Placements
Because a lot young disabled people never get a Saturday job or a work experience placement, we have joined up with a wide variety of companies and organisations to offer our beneficiaries the chance to gain invaluable insight into the work environment. All our work placements are tailored to the individual young persons needs and interests, and take place throughout the year.
21 year-old Ambassador Ruth, who is studying journalism, did her work experience at our HQ office and BBC Ouch and found it to be a very positive and beneficial experience:
“I absolutely loved every minute of my work experience at Whizz-Kidz and at the BBC. As a wheelchair user I found barriers to getting work experience and the placements I have been offered didn’t fit into what I’m interested in at all. I feel more confident about my transition into the workplace since taking part”
If you’re a young person and would like to find out more about work placement opportunities, please contact us.
If you’d like to help us to change more young disabled peoples lives please go to support Whizz-Kidz.
