We are delighted to be supported by Barratt Developments, the nation’s largest house builder, who are helping Whizz-Kidz to transform the lives of young wheelchair users, and make progress towards improving accessibility in the UK.
Barratt Developments has provided over £100,000 of vital funds to support our work, including key projects alongside the Kidz Board of Whizz-Kidz. For over three years, we have also welcomed teams of fantastic runners from Barratt Developments to compete in the London Marathon.
In 2018, we commenced our collaboration with Barratt Developments and our Kidz Board, to help make tangible improvements to accessibility. Having initially heard from our Kidz Board to gain an understanding of the kinds of challenges they have encountered related to the accessibility of their own homes and friends’ homes, and the human impact that lack of accessibility can have, Barratts invited Kidz Board representatives to visit sites across the UK to assess the accessibility of communal areas.
This produced a list of 10 recommendations for developments to provide a more inclusive wider environment for disabled residents and visitors, such as through the use of dropped kerbs.
The suggestions encouraged Barratts to think more carefully about how they can improve the accessibility of their developments and they are now actively looking for a development where they can pilot the recommendations.
Given the success of the project, Barratt Developments will continue to work with the Kidz Board throughout 2020 and 2021 on additional areas that will help to increase accessibility, and ultimately the independence of wheelchair users.
