Whizz Kidz Statement on Disability Benefit Reforms
Whizz Kidz is deeply concerned about the government’s proposed changes to PIP
As a charity dedicated to empowering young wheelchair users, Whizz Kidz is deeply concerned about the government’s proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP). While we welcome efforts to provide greater employment support, PIP is a vital source of support that enables disabled people to live independently, access education and employment, and participate fully in society.
PIP is not just a benefit; it is a vital means for young wheelchair users to access mobility aids, transportation, and personal care—enabling them to participate fully in education, work, and social life. Tightening the eligibility criteria in PIP could have a devastating impact on their ability to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
Sarah Pugh, Chief Executive of Whizz Kidz, said:
"Every day, we see the positive impact that the right support has on young disabled people’s lives. At Whizz Kidz, we work tirelessly to enable as many young people as possible to gain independence, confidence, and opportunities. These proposed reforms could put that progress at risk, and we urge the government to ensure that no young person loses the support they need to thrive."
We urge the government to ensure that any reforms protect the rights and dignity of young disabled people. Cutting support to those who face daily mobility challenges risks increasing isolation and inequality. We stand with our community in calling for a fair and inclusive welfare system that upholds the independence and aspirations of all disabled people.
