Donate, recycle or responsibly dispose of unwanted wheelchair equipment. With our guide on what to do with unwanted and unloved wheelchairs and equipment.

While we’re unable to take back old wheelchairs, that doesn’t mean they have to end up at the local tip!
This guide explains what you can do with unwanted adaptive equipment and how to ensure it finds a useful new home or is safely recycled.
Wheelchairs are life-changing, but they’re also expensive. Many families struggle to access funding or face long waits for replacements. On the other hand, an unwanted wheelchair or other pieces of adaptive equipment can take up valuable space.
Donating, recycling, or responsibly reusing unwanted items means someone else can benefit from owning them. It can also help to reduce waste, too.
Many national and local charities will accept donations of used adaptive equipment. They only want equipment that’s in good working order.
Before you donate anything away, you’ll need to make sure it’s safe, clean, and fully functional. (Don’t worry, we provide some advice below.)
Some potential places that might take your old equipment include:
You’ll need to make contact with these organisations yourself and find out if they can accept your old wheelchair.
If your equipment is beyond repair or you can’t find a local charity to take it, don’t just take it to the recycling centre.
Some councils offer specialist collection or recycling services for medical or mobility items. Some suppliers also run take-back schemes where they refurbish or responsibly dismantle old wheelchairs.
You’ll need to check with your local authority or equipment provider to see if these options are available.
If you can’t find anyone willing to take your item, then you can take items to your local recycling centre. Be sure to check that you’re putting your items in the right bin. Don’t be afraid to ask for some help finding the right place to put your items.
Before donating your wheelchair (or other adaptive equipment) make sure they’re clean and sanitised. Check all moving parts including brakes, wheels and supports. work safely. Include manuals and accessories if you have them.
Never donate or give away something you wouldn’t want to receive yourself. Use your common sense and only donate items that can be used again.
