Your wheelchair can take you on lots of adventures, so it's important that you regularly check it’s safe to use.

Here, our experts list the essential wheelchair checks that you should be doing every day.

What you’ll learn

  • Daily wheelchair checks you can do at home
  • How to spot problems before they get worse
  • Where to seek help if you identify a problem

Daily wheelchair safety checks

These are the daily checks that our experts recommend you do when you first use your wheelchair:

  • Brakes: Test them before moving. They should hold the chair firmly in place
  • Tyres: Check they feel firm. Roll backwards and forwards and check for bald spots, splits, tears, or anything stuck in the tread
  • Footplates: Check they are properly secured and don’t wobble
  • Positioning belt: Clip it in and check the belt itself for any splits or tears
  • Controls (powered chairs): Test that the joystick, buttons or eyegaze controls are all working as expected before moving

You should be able to do these checks on your own but don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

How to do these checks

The daily check list here is common sense and you’ll find that over time, it becomes automatic.

We recommend that you check your chair every day as soon as you sit down. It should take a few minutes and will give you peace of mind before you use it.

If you notice a problem, it’s important not to ignore it as it could be dangerous. It’s also not going to get any better unless you get it fixed.

You can make some adjustments at home, but you may need the help of a professional.

You can speak to your local wheelchair service (if you have one). Alternatively, you can contact the manufacturer or look for an independent wheelchair service centre.

Round up: Daily wheelchair checks

It’s your responsibility to check your chair each day to ensure it’s safe to use. It should only take a few minutes to complete and, after a while, will become second nature.

Here’s a reminder of what we’ve covered:

  • Essential daily wheelchair checks for manual wheelchairs and powerchairs
  • Why you should check your wheelchair every day
  • What to do if you spot a problem
