Our new strategy, Empowering Young Wheelchair Users, is here to change that. Our new strategy has three ambitious initiatives:
Our 2022-2024 Strategy
Too many young people aren’t getting the wheelchair or support that fully meets their needs. Without the ability to be independent young wheelchair users are restricted in their ability to socialise and participate in society.
Nusaybah's Mum said:
“Seeing her doing 360 degrees round and round bought it home just how happy she is with her chair and the independence it has given her.”
Three-year-old Nusaybah is now able to play and attend nursery, thanks to her new lightweight wheelchair from Whizz-Kidz. Around 75,000 young people in the UK need a wheelchair to be mobile.
Our Strategy Summary
Our strategic initiatives in detail:
Mobile: We will significantly increase our provision of high quality wheelchairs to young people
This priority is focused on doubling the number of young people we support by providing wheelchairs and essential mobility equipment.
By the end of 2024 we aim to:
- Increase the number of young wheelchair users receiving wheelchairs and equipment support to 2,000(*)
- Deliver all mobility equipment to young people within 18 weeks
*In 2021, Whizz-Kidz provided wheelchairs and mobility equipment to 900 young people.
Enabled: We will provide confidence-building experiences for every young wheelchair user in the UK
This priority is focused on increasing the number of young people we support with confidence-building experiences, delivered through Wheelchair Skills Training, Employability Training and our Activity Programmes.
By the end of 2024 we aim to:
- Offer accredited training and support to young people
- Increase the number of young wheelchair users accessing our young people’s services programmes to 1,600(*) per year
- Improve how we measure and understand the impact our services have for young people, to inform and shape future service provision
*In 2021, 600 young wheelchair users accessed Whizz-Kidz young people’s services programmes.
Included: We will work with young wheelchair users to create societal change and inclusion
This priority is focused on influencing long-term sustainable change and inclusion for young wheelchair users in the UK.
We will ensure young people’s voices are amplified to create and lead a movement for change, to ignite public awareness of the challenges faced by young wheelchair users.
By the end of 2024 we aim to:
- Work with the NHS to improve the NHS Wheelchair Criteria for young people
- Campaign to make wheelchair skills training mandatory for all young wheelchair users
- Inform and lobby decision makers on changes that could be made to benefit young wheelchair users
But we can’t do it without you.
By working together with young wheelchair users and all our supporters, we know that we will be making a bigger difference for young wheelchair users across the UK.
Without our supporter’s generosity and dedication, we would not be able to empower young wheelchair users across the UK.
