Redeveloping a sensory room that offers a safe environment for pupils to regulate, explore and interact safely

Crownbridge School in Wales was looking to re-develop their sensory room. The sensory room offers a safe environment for pupils to regulate, explore and interact safely. By updating the equipment, the school hoped it would be used to its full potential and be accessible to all pupils.

“The sensory room is utilised on a daily basis and is timetable to ensure all pupils access this valuable resource. Pupils use it for a number of reasons; to regulate, to reduce sensory overload, to stimulate senses, to develop focus and attention, to communicate with others and engage in social interactions, to develop motor skills and to relax in a comfortable, stimulating environment”

The school were able to use their funding to create fully inclusive environment for young people to develop their regulation skills and explore sensory learning. Pupils were able to direct plans for the room, telling the school what they would like to see in the new space.

The school said their project had been really successful and rated being involved in the community change projects 5 out of 5.

“Since returning to school, it has already impacted positively on the pupils.  We have seen lots of smiles and happy pupils, as this space has given individuals with the tools and techniques to manage their own sensory needs and emotional state.  It has also been encouraging more movement and exploration, as well as promoting communication and shared participation.”
