Devansh's Story
Devansh is a social, joyful and cheeky young person whose love for travel, adventure and being with people shines through everything he does
At Whizz Kidz, we believe that mobility is more than movement- it’s confidence, independence and the freedom to experience the world without limits. Every young person we support has a unique journey, and each story highlights the transformative power of the right equipment, opportunities and community.
One of these stories is Devansh’s. His journey reflects the joy, curiosity and boundless spirit that we see in so many of the young people who we support. From everyday adventures to extraordinary experiences, his story shows what becomes possible when barriers are removed and support is within reach.
Below, we share Devansh’s Story - a celebration of his energy, his family’s determination, and the role Whizz Kidz has played in opening up new worlds of adventure.
Devansh is a social, joyful and cheeky young person whose love for travel, adventure and being with people shines through everything he does. He thrives on shared experiences and brings warmth and happiness wherever he goes.
His family first heard about Whizz Kidz through support networks for families of children with disabilities. While Devansh’s day-to-day wheelchair is provided by the NHS and he has a foldable chair for his travels, Whizz Kidz has played a crucial role in opening doors to experiences that once felt out of reach.
“Whizz Kidz has given us opportunities to participate in wonderful events like sailing, surfing and climbing, experiences that would otherwise have been unthinkable for us.”
The right support makes all the difference
Devansh has been using a wheelchair since he was five years old. Before receiving a properly adjusted wheelchair at the age of nine, the family relied heavily on carrying him.
“The wheelchair we had then was not well suited for him, so we used it only when absolutely required. Since he got his properly adjusted wheelchair, our life has changed significantly and for the better.”
Having the right equipment transformed not just mobility, but independence, confidence and participation. Devansh is now comfortable travelling by bus, taxi, train and plane, navigating busy airports and public spaces with support and without discomfort.
“Once we had the right equipment, it immediately enabled travel and participation. Without it, travelling abroad or attending events would have been impossible.”
Opening up the world - together
With the right mobility support in place, Devansh and his family have been able to travel widely and meaningfully. These journeys weren’t just holidays; they were moments of connection, celebration and belonging.
Some of their most memorable trips include:
- India - attending a cousin’s wedding and spending Christmas with extended family
- Germany - celebrating a milestone 50th birthday together
- Serbia - travelling for therapy
- Train journeys across the UK, including trips to Edinburgh and to Darlington for Conductive Education
“The folding wheelchair allowed us to navigate airports and large gatherings safely and comfortably. Most importantly, Devansh experienced a full Indian wedding of his beloved cousin and met his entire extended family.”
For Devansh’s mum, the impact has been just as profound.
“Travel for therapies, vacations, festivals and family events has become logistically possible and far less stressful. I know his mobility and postural needs are fully supported, and that gives us the confidence to step out into the world.”
Freedom to take part, without restriction
Through Whizz Kidz activity days, Devansh has taken part in sailing, surfing, climbing and ice skating.
“What he likes most about Whizz Kidz is being able to attend events without restriction.”
These experiences reinforce what true inclusion looks like - not just access, but joy, confidence and shared experiences alongside others.
A message of hope
Devansh’s family is passionate about encouraging other young wheelchair users to seek the support they deserve.
“The right wheelchair or buggy makes travel and daily life possible. With appropriate support, you can take part in activities that may have seemed impossible before.”
They also hope for a future where accessibility is the norm, not the exception.
“We would love to see greater awareness and accommodation across transport systems and public spaces, so children with disabilities and their families can travel safely and participate fully.”
What Whizz Kidz means to this family
“Whizz Kidz provides amazing opportunities for inclusion and adventure.”
For Devansh, that inclusion means freedom, adventure and fun and the chance to simply be a joyful, cheeky young person, fully part of the world around him.
