International Wheelchair Day 2026: Celebrating Freedom, Independence and Charlie’s Big Moment
International Wheelchair Day is about highlighting the importance of accessibility and the achievements of wheelchair users worldwide
1 March marks International Wheelchair Day - a global celebration of the mobility, independence and confidence that the right wheelchair can unlock. At Whizz Kidz, it’s also a powerful reminder of why our mission matters: because every young wheelchair user deserves the chance to experience a full, fun and free childhood.
This year, we’re shining a spotlight on one incredible young girl whose story embodies exactly what International Wheelchair Day is all about.
Meet Charlie – “Childhood Can’t Wait”
Charlie is a bright, sassy and hilarious 8‑year‑old who loves colouring, crafting, YouTube and anything pink or purple. Like many children her age, she loves being outdoors, playing with friends and keeping up at school.
But unlike most 8‑year‑olds, Charlie has spent much of her life in and out of hospital. Her health can change rapidly, and on difficult days she can spend long stretches confined to bed. On her better days, her wheelchair becomes her safe space, her independence and her freedom - the thing that lets her join the world again.
Charlie has spina bifida, other complex medical conditions, and pituitary dwarfism, meaning she is just 93cm tall. Finding equipment that fits her properly is difficult and costly. For more than five years, the NHS has been unable to provide an appropriate wheelchair, leaving Whizz Kidz to step in and ensure she doesn’t miss out on childhood.
As she outgrew her first chair, the wait began again.
And then, in early February, something incredible happened.
Charlie Received Her New Bright Pink Powerchair
After waiting for so long, and after helping launch our Childhood Can’t Wait campaign, Charlie finally received her new customised bright pink powerchair this month.
It was an emotional moment for her whole family.
Her mum, Rebecca, told us:
“Getting this new powerchair today is lifechanging for Charlie. It’s going to increase her independence and means she can go wherever she wants without help or getting tired out.”
For Charlie, this isn’t just about wheels. It’s about keeping up with friends, it’s about confidence, joining in at school, it’s about joy and freedom.
As she put it herself:
“I’m excited for my new chair because it’s going to be pink. But it makes me sad when it takes a long time.”
No child should have to feel that sadness. No child should wait years for independence.
Why International Wheelchair Day Matters
More than 378 young people are still waiting for life‑changing mobility equipment. And while the incredible support shown during our Childhood Can’t Wait appeal has brought us closer than ever to reopening our waiting list, the need remains urgent:
- 74% of young wheelchair users say delays are limiting their independence
- 69% are missing out on school activities or friendships
- 6 in 10 are living in discomfort or pain
These are not just numbers- they are lost moments of childhood.
And childhood can’t wait.
Thanks to you, we’re getting closer
Our supporters have shown extraordinary generosity over recent months. Every donation, every share, every fundraiser brings us closer to reopening our waiting list and ensuring more children, like Charlie, get the equipment they need, when they need it.
As Whizz Kidz CEO Sarah Pugh says:
“International Wheelchair Day is about celebrating everything mobility makes possible. Many young people have already experienced life‑changing moments, like Charlie. But childhood is precious, and too many young people are still waiting. We are determined to reach them.”
This International Wheelchair Day, help us reach the next child
A wheelchair is more than equipment.
It is independence.
It is confidence.
It is safety.
It is joy.
It is childhood.
If you are able to, please help us cross the line and ensure that every young wheelchair user waiting for support gets the same moment of freedom that Charlie experienced this month.
