National Siblings Day: Celebrating the Siblings Who Shine Too

Celebrating National Siblings Day

10 April is National Siblings Day, and at Whizz Kidz, we’re taking a moment to celebrate a group of young people who are kind, thoughtful, resilient - and often quietly brilliant: siblings of young wheelchair users.

Siblings are there for the everyday moments - the laughs, the eye rolls, the inside jokes, but for siblings of disabled children, life can come with a few extra layers. They might take on more responsibility, feel the need to be “the strong one”, or simply struggle to find space where theyare the focus.

That’s exactly why our Sibling Group events exists.

A place just for siblings

Our online Sibling Group is for siblings aged 7–15, and we meet once a month on a Monday or Tuesday evening. Children join from across the UK to hang out, have fun, and connect with others who get it.

Each session is built around:

  • Fun games and creative activities
  • Open, pressure-free conversations
  • Confidence‑boosting experiences
  • Friendships with children in similar situations

To make things extra exciting, we often send out craft packs, game materials or downloadable resources ahead of the session. Even better? Siblings help shape the group themselves by suggesting activities they’d love to try and wherever possible, we make those ideas happen.

Why it matters

The impact of the Sibling Group is huge and the feedback says it all:

  • 100% of parents said the group is fun
  • 67% said it has boosted their child’s social life
  • 50% said it has built their child’s confidence
  • 100% said their child feels included, and 83% said they feel listened to

One parent shared:

“It's a great place for siblings to socialise and share fun and worries. It helps kids to be themselves and have a safe space where they can say and do things without being judged.”

Another described it as:

“A safe space, a lot of fun and a lot of experiences they wouldn’t otherwise get… it’s given my child a place to confide and talk to other children in similar circumstances, and to just be a kid.”

That idea - a place to just be a kid - is at the heart of everything we do.

Less isolation, more confidence

Over the past year, 34 siblings have taken part, with children joining us from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Parents told us that:

  • 100% felt their child had tried new things
  • 100% felt the group had a positive impact on wellbeing
  • 100% said their child felt less isolated after attending

One parent beautifully put it:

“He feels included. The attention is on him rather than his sister.”

Another shared:

“She’s a lot happier and a lot more confident.”

People often underestimate the impact of growing up alongside a disabled sibling. Being able to offer a space where siblings feel seen, heard and supported is incredibly special and exactly what we hoped to create when we first launched the Sibling Group.

Join the fun

This National Siblings Day, we’re celebrating siblings everywhere - their kindness, their strength, and their right to have space that’s just for them.

If you know a sibling aged 7–15 who would love a fun, friendly group where they can connect, create and be themselves, we’d love to welcome them.
