The Best Present Ever

Nina's Story

On the day before her third birthday, Nina received her wheelchair from Whizz Kidz. She saw her world open up and childhood unlock before her eyes as a result, the greatest gift she could have received!

The most impactful moment, as described by her Mum to The Express, was when she went to nursery for the first time in her chair. She was suddenly able to go from room to room, exploring and making friends just like her peers.

I remember the nursery teachers were just in tears, they couldn’t believe it.

It was clear how transformative Nina’s new sense of independence was. It’s now been two years since that lifechanging moment, and Nina, who is now five, continues to thrive and grow in both independence and confidence.

Her first Whizz Kidz wheelchair was a lightweight model, which she has since swapped for a sturdier model in her favourite colour, yellow!

Not worrying about the wheelchair

Nina was born with a rare genetic condiiton, spinal muscular atrophy. When she was younger, she attended lots of hospital appointments to find out what was wrong, before being diagnosed in the Czech Republic, where the family had travelled for physiotherapy.

She has recently been receiving four-monthly injections, with the aim of slowing the progression of her condition. Her parents have remarked that knowing the wheelchair is sorted means they can focus on medical appointments and make sure she gets what she needs.

The impact of Nina’s gift is felt by her whole family, and together they can focus on making sure she has the best childhood possible.

Childhood can’t wait. Friendships can’t wait. Independence can’t wait.
