The Difference a Year Makes

Hunter's Story

The Express met Hunter, who has just started school, at a Whizz Kidz Clinic as part of our Christmas partnership.

He was soon demonstrating his impressive skills in making his wheelchair spin, and, of course, racing across the clinic as quickly as possible.

These skills are even more impressive given that Hunter only received his wheelchair from Whizz Kidz a year ago, and prior to that he was using an NHS wheelchair that he was unable to self-propel.

The joy of moving around independently is clear when you meet Hunter, who was born with cerebral palsy, and his Mum shares in this joy.

We contacted Whizz Kidz, they gave us this [wheelchair], and he’s been flying ever since. It’s a brilliant chair. We can use it on grass, out and about. It’s really light so it’s easy for Hunter to move around.

Wheelchairs fit for the future

Hunter was visiting the clinic that day not just to demonstrate his skills, but also to have the backrest of his chair altered, along with some adjustments to help ensure a good fit as he grows.

His parents had noticed he was leaning to the left in his chair, and so extra support was built in around the middle for him.

It’s brilliant that Whizz Kids do this. They give children like Hunter a lifeline, the ability to move around.
