The Sky's the Limit

Logan's Story

This Christmas, The Express and their readers are generously supporting our Childhood Can’t Wait Appeal.

For the past month, they have gone behind the scenes at Whizz Kidz to meet the young people and families we support and sharing their stories with their readers.

One of those children is thirteen year old Logan. You can read the original piece in The Express here.

Logan

A customised powered wheelchair has been described as a ‘gamechanger’ for Logan as he heads into his teenage years.

For Logan, who has cerebral palsy, pushing a manual wheelchair was too tiring and kept him back from being able to play with his friends. Six years later, his powered wheelchair has been the best decision for his health, his confidence and his independence.

His independence has sky-rocketed. He’s just off and we don’t see him when he’s in his powered chair.

Charlotte, Logan's Mum

Logan has a huge variety of hobbies and interests, including (but certainly not limited to) performing in school plays, playing with his friends outside and attending Comicon. His wheelchair is the key to all of this, as it can help him to move around on stage and on uneven terrain like grass.

Wheelchair skills training

Logan has also attended Whizz Kidz’ wheelchair skills training, designed to help young people from age 2 – 25 use their wheelchair to navigate the world around them with confidence, and even style!

Sessions include how to navigate life’s obstacles including kerbs, street furniture and public transport.

This has been hugely impactful on Logan’s confidence, and has meant he’s only had one small bump in his chair.

Family life

Logan’s parents remarked on how his powered wheelchair allows him his privacy and independence as a teenager, and the impact of this on his confidence.

He’s 13 so he’s at an age where really he would be off with his mates. Logan’s not able to do that so for us to be able to close his bedroom door while he’s in his powered chair, or if we’re going out somewhere seeing him go off and not have to be attached to our sides, is lovely. It’s a game-changer.

Logan’s chair has been adjusted over the years to fit his growing body, and he’s now on the waiting list for a new one.
