Whizz Kidz calling for an urgent extension to the Household Support fund

Sarah Pugh, CEO at Whizz Kidz said;

I am deeply concerned following the news that the government has quietly dropped a commitment to increase the amount of money that disabled people in England can claim to adapt their homes. This decision, if not rectified, will undoubtedly have significant implications for countless families across the UK, particularly those with young wheelchair users.

As many of you know, Whizz Kidz is dedicated to improving the lives of young wheelchair users across the UK. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to live in a safe and accessible environment that supports their physical and mental well-being. However, unsuitable housing poses a significant barrier to achieving this goal.

That's why Whizz Kidz has joined forces with over 120 organisations, including Barnardo's, in signing a letter addressed to the Chancellor. We are urgently calling for an extension to the funding that helps families adapt their homes to meet the unique needs of disabled individuals. Without this vital support, countless families will continue to struggle, facing unnecessary hardships and challenges.

It's crucial to recognise that inadequate housing not only affects the individual with disabilities but also has a ripple effect on their entire family. The physical and mental health implications are profound and cannot be ignored. Therefore, addressing this issue must be a priority for our government.

I urge the government to reconsider its decision and honour its commitment to increasing funding for home adaptations. Whizz Kidz remains steadfast in our mission to empower young wheelchair users and their families. We will continue to advocate tirelessly for the resources and support they deserve, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are met. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive in a safe and supportive environment.
